To forget one's ancestors
is to be a brook without a source a
tree without a root.

                                    LOOKING FOR THE CONTINUING CITY

On the chilly morning of February 13th, 2004, the sky looked as if God was at work oil painting. A ball of radiant yellow in an eternal sea of cool azure was the setting of the homegoing celebration for the beautiful Sylvia Agnes Lynn. That morning, bordered by loved ones and strangers alike, re-established how much I resented funerals, but it also reminded me that this life is only temporary: For here we have no continuing city, but we seek one to come.
I examined my Grandmother’s engaging, bronzed face as she lay in her casket. I noticed that she was wearing a soft smile, as if she had recognized and accepted that her life on this earth was complete. She was an intelligent woman who raised five wonderful daughters in West Baltimore, and had retired as the director of Parkview Recreation Center.
When my brother, my cousins and I went to summer camp at the “Rec”, we acted like royalty; embracing our nepotistic privileges as we looked into the green eyes of the kid’s who only wished they had it like us. I would ask Grandma if she could open the gym so that I could play one on none with my imaginary opponent, and listen to an invisible crowd cheer me on.
I was enjoying the travels of the good life, and Grandma was the perfect tour guide. Those summers at the Rec were some of the best times of my life, not just because of the spoiling benefits, but watching my Grandmother’s strength, humility and grace touch people’s core let me know that she was no commonplace woman, she was truly remarkable.
Even when my grandmother was lying in a hospice, I was never expecting her departure. I was using naiveté as a shield against reality, but two weeks before her passing, the truth finally struck me.
After visiting her bedside, I leaned over to kiss her goodnight, and as I left, I started to weep. It was a weep that sneaked me like a thief in the night, for I realized that I would never again taste her delicious chicken and dumplings, or smell the sweet scent of China Musk when we embraced, or see her tiny eyes disappear when she released her infectious laugh.
Sometimes, in the daylight’s brilliance, I stare into the vast Heavenly blue, praying that my Grandma has found that continuing city.
